The Process

Step 1
Initial Phone Call
All families begin with an initial phone call to answer any questions and determine if the CCC will meet your current needs.

Step 2
Parent Consultation
A 55 minute free consultation to discuss in depth your concerns. If possible both parents should be available. Separate consultations can be provided in the case of divorced parents and will be charged the clinician’s hourly rate. I will go over detailed background information about your child and family, learn about your current parenting successes and areas of growth, review practice policies, and set goals for your child’s therapeutic work.

Step 3
Pre-Treatment Assessments
Two assessments give helpful information for the therapeutic process. The Parent Stress Index (PSI) and the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) can be emailed to the parent prior to the child’s first session or they can be taken during the child’s first session. As treatment progresses, I may encourage additional assessments and will discuss with you during our updates. Referral sources for additional assessments will be discussed.

Step 4
Therapy Sessions with Your Child
Sessions are 55 minutes for children 6-13 and 45 minutes for children 3-5. Occasionally a neurodivergent child will benefit from a shorter session. If that is the case, I will discuss with you. During your child’s session, you will fill out an update noting progress and challenges during the previous week. Informational handouts are available in the waiting area.

Step 5
Parent Consultations
After 4-5 sessions with your child, we will schedule a free 55-minute parent consultation to review progress and interventions to try at home. The CPRT material is also covered in the parent consultations giving you new tools to deepen your connection with your child while providing healthy structure.

Step 6
Follow-Up Recommendations
The current national average for the length of children’s therapy is 30-40 sessions. Younger children are typically less at 20-30 sessions. I will discuss with you at each parent consultation your child’s progress and we will agree on continuing therapy for one more block of 4-6 sessions, pausing therapy, or an outside referral such as occupational or speech therapy.

Step 7
A Healthy Goodbye
Children need healthy goodbyes. The termination phase includes 4 sessions with a countdown so the child can prepare to say goodbye. We celebrate during the last session and parents are included. Dancing will be involved if chosen!
