Hi! I’m Denise Maxwell. I’m a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in Virginia, and I’m a Registered Play Therapist™ (RPT) with the Association for Play Therapists.
I created The Child Counseling Center of Tidewater because I am passionate about serving children and families.
I grew up in Oklahoma marrying my college sweetheart. Over the next several years I was busy with teaching school and raising three children. Then, I decided to pursue a master’s in counseling to provide individualized support for kids – without the homework!
I have been loving and supporting children in a myriad of settings since my after-school job at a preschool when I was a teenager. This totals over three decades.

At the CCC, Children Are The Focus!
Individual therapy for the child is based on Child-Centered Play Therapy (CCPT), a unique non-directive model of therapy proven to be effective over decades of research. I believe that children will grow in self-enhancing ways given the time, tools, and space to do so.
Parent support is based on Child-Parent Relationship Therapy (CPRT), a companion approach giving parents the skills to deepen their connection, and improve healthy structure.
Thoughtful details in the office are reminders that children are the focus here. Children deserve a place where childhood is honored and celebrated!
Children Deserve a Place Where Childhood is Honored and Celebrated
A dual purpose of the CCC is equipping clinicians and educators. In the fall of 2026, I will begin offering supervision for licensed residents in counseling in Virginia. I am also pursuing a Registered Play Therapy Supervisor (RPT-S) credential which I expect to be completed by January 2027. This credential will enable me to provide play therapy (RPT) supervision for state licensed clinicians pursuing credentials with APT.
Collaboration and support with licensed child-focused clinicians is also available.

I am available to present Child-Teacher Relationship Training (CTRT) to preschool and early elementary educators for professional development.
